A Study of Job Stress and Turnover Intention of Staff Nurses

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the job stress and turnover intention of staff nurses working in the general hospitals.

Method: Data was collected by questionnaires from 384 staff nurses, with more than 200 beds, in Kungbuk province and Daegu city. The instruments used for this study were The Work Stress Scale which was developed by Gu and Kim(1984), and The Turnover Intention Scale which was developed by Kim and Lee(2001). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Tukey¢¥s post hoc contrast, Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient adopted using an SPSS WIN 10.0 program.

Results: The mean score of the job stress, turnover intention was 2.64 and 4.44 respectively. The degree of job stress of staff nurses revealed statistically significant difference according to the hospital classfication, satisfaction of current duty post. The degree of turnover intention of staff nurses revealed statistically significant difference according to the age, marital status, number of children, education, nursing career, satisfaction of current duty post.

Conslusion: Prevention of turnover is need for special consideration in nursing administration in terms of reducing the job stress of staff nurses.
